Add-ons for the system you have
Accessories and add-ons
Comfort is not only a matter of temperature. A house at 72 degrees can still be dusty, smoky in August, or so dry in January that the floors gap. Air-Tech installs four add-ons for the air itself, and the first step is a short check you can do at the kitchen table.
The equipment is installed and serviced by the same crew that works on your furnace and air conditioner. For the wider picture, see indoor air quality service.
The eight-question check
Tick the ones that sound like your house
If you checked 3 or more of these boxes, your indoor air quality may be suffering. Tell the office which ones you ticked and they will recommend from there.
- Does anyone in your home have allergies or asthma?
- Are there pets in the house?
- Do cooking smells and other odors hang around?
- Is anyone in the household more prone to bacterial or viral infections?
- Is mold or other microbial growth a concern?
- Do dust and cobwebs build up quickly?
- Do the windows fog or run with condensation in the colder months?
- Do you burn a wood or gas fireplace?
The four add-ons
What goes into the system
Air Scrubber
An in-duct air purifier by Aerus that goes into the ductwork you already have. It treats the air the heating and cooling system is moving anyway, so there is no unit sitting in a room.
Because it lives in the duct, the fit matters: it has to suit the ductwork and the airflow of the system it joins. Air-Tech checks that before anything goes in.
Trane CleanEffects
A whole-home electronic air cleaner that mounts on the system and cleans the air passing through the ducts. It is built to catch far finer particles than a standard filter can.
It is a permanent part of the system rather than a filter to swap, so it works best in a house where the equipment has room around it.
Aprilaire steam humidifier
An electrode steam humidifier for the dry air a Columbia Basin winter brings. Electrodes in a canister heat the water, and the steam is delivered through the ducts.
It is a good match for tight houses, wood floors and homes where the furnace runs in short cycles. The canister and electrodes wear out, so it needs a service visit now and then.
HRV5
A fresh-air purifier made for mini-split and ductless homes. A ductless house has no central duct to carry ventilation air, so most in-duct equipment is not an option, and this unit fills that gap.
Ask about it when a mini split is going in or already runs your house, and the shop will say whether it makes sense for the layout.
