Indoor Air Quality for Tri-Cities homes

Air cleaners, humidifiers and fresh-air ventilation, installed into the system you already have.

Chapter 01

What is in the air of a Tri-Cities house

Temperature is only half of how a house feels. The air in a Pasco or Kennewick home also carries household dust, pet dander and cooking smells, and in wildfire season it carries fine smoke that drifts in through door gaps and leaky return ducts. In spring, pollen finds the same routes into the house.

Winters in the Columbia Basin run dry, and a furnace working for months dries the house out further. That shows up as static shocks, chapped skin and wood floors that open up at the seams. Knowing which problem your house actually has decides which equipment is worth buying and which would be money wasted.

The equipment Air-Tech installs

Air Scrubber is an in-duct air purifier by Aerus that goes into existing ductwork, and Trane CleanEffects is a whole-home electronic air cleaner. Both work on the air moving through the heating and cooling system, so there is no box to find room for in a living space. They suit different houses, and Air-Tech will say which one fits yours.

The Aprilaire steam humidifier puts moisture back into dry winter air through the ducts. The HRV5 is a fresh-air purifier made for mini-split and ductless homes, where there is no central duct to carry ventilation. Each one has parts that wear, such as filters, canisters and electrodes, so repair and maintenance are part of the job as well as installation.

Whatever goes in has to match the system around it: duct size, fan capacity and the space beside the furnace or air handler. A unit that starves the blower of airflow trades one problem for another, so the fit is checked before anything is ordered.

Chapter 03

The eight-question check

Air-Tech begins with eight plain questions about the house: allergies or asthma, pets, cooking smells that linger, anyone who catches infections easily, mold worries, dust that comes back fast, window condensation in cold months, and a wood or gas fireplace. Their rule is that three or more yes answers suggests the air in the home may be suffering.

The answers steer the recommendation, which fits the shop's own rule of proposing the right system rather than the most expensive one. Call Air-Tech in Pasco at (509) 392-2021 and talk it through, or read all eight questions on the accessories page, where the four products are also described.
